One day Lulu and her mommy went to a science museum. There were lots of things to see at the museum. Lulu and her mommy walked around and looked at a display that showed how to make shadows with your hands. Lulu put her hands together in front of a light, and waved her fingers out. It made a shadow on the wall that looked like a bird flapping its wings.
At the museum there was also a display of things that felt different from each other. People could put their hands in the display cases to feel what was inside, and try to guess what it was. Then they would open the display case and see if they were correct. Lulu tried, and the first case she could feel something soft. She opened the lid and saw a feather. In the second case she could feel something sharp. She opened the lid and saw a rock.
In the third case she felt something sticky. She opened the lid and saw some honey. In the fourth case she felt something smooth. She opened the lid and saw a small glass ball. In the fifth case she felt something wet. She opened the lid and saw a napkin with water on it. In the sixth case she felt something sandy. She opened the lid and saw some sand. In the seventh case she felt something squishy. She opened the lid and saw a dog toy in it.
Lulu thought this was great and she wanted to make the same thing at home. After a while, Lulu and her mommy were finished at the museum. They left the museum and got in the car. Lulu’s mommy drove home, and Lulu thought about what to put in her display cases. When they arrived at home, Lulu took out some cardboard boxes. She cut a hole in each box, which could fit her hand. But with the box closed, she couldn’t see inside.
Then she put something different into each of the boxes. She put a bowl in one box, and poured some salt in it. She put a towel in another box. In the next box she put a bowl with jam in it. Lulu put a sponge in the next box. Then she put a hand mirror in another box. And lastly she put a bowl of water in a box. Now she was ready for an experiment. Lulu called her friend Jimmy, and invited him to come over.
Jimmy left his home and went to Lulu’s place. When he arrived Lulu told him that she had made a museum display. There were six boxes with something hidden in each. And he couldn’t see inside, but he had to put his hand in and guess what it was. Jimmy smiled and said he would try. In the first box, he felt something soft. He guessed it was a shirt. Lulu opened the box and showed him it was a towel.
In the second box, Jimmy felt something sticky. He guessed it was some mud. Lulu opened the box and showed him it was some jam. In the third box he felt something sharp. He guessed it was a few sticks. Lulu opened the box and showed him it was the tip of a fork. In the fourth box he left something smooth. He guessed it was a plate. Lulu opened the box and showed him it was a hand mirror.
In the fifth box, Jimmy felt something wet. He guessed it was water. Lulu opened the box and showed him that he was right. In the sixth box he felt something sandy. He guessed it was sand. Lulu opened the box and showed Jimmy it was salt. In the seventh box he felt something squishy. He guessed it was some bread. Lulu opened the box and showed him it was a sponge.
Jimmy laughed and said he only got one right, which was the water. Then Lulu’s daddy came from the kitchen where he was making dinner. He asked Lulu if she knew where the salt was. Lulu said she had used some in her display experiment with Jimmy. She gave her daddy the salt container and he used it while making dinner.
Lulu invited Jimmy to have dinner with her and her parents. Jimmy said that would be nice. He called his parents on the phone and asked them. They said that was fine. Then Lulu and Jimmy helped get ready by putting dishes on the table. Then dinner was ready, and Jimmy sat down with Lulu and her parents.
After dinner, Jimmy thanked them and said he was going home. But Lulu had one more thing to show Jimmy. She put her hands together in front of a lamp, and it made a shadow on the wall. The shadow looked like a bird flapping its wings. Jimmy laughed and waved goodbye.
Then Lulu helped clean up the dishes. Afterwards she put away all the things that were in her display boxes. Lulu then took a book from the bookshelf and read for a little while. When she was done reading, she got ready for bed. She brushed her teeth and then laid down. Lulu closed her eyes, and went to sleep, slowly slowly slowly.
