One day there was a package delivery, and it arrived at Lulu’s home. Her parents brought it inside, and it came inside a big box. They opened it up and took it out, and then the box was empty.
Lulu saw the box and wanted to keep it and turn it into something. She wanted to make a little room for her toy stuffed zebra. She got some blankets and pillows and put it in the corner of the box. That made a nice little bed area for her toy zebra.
Then Lulu drew a chair and table in another corner of the box, and that would be for the baby zebra to sit and eat. Lulu drew a picture of a plate of scrambled eggs. She cut out that drawing and put that in the same corner of the cardboard box.
Lulu also wanted the toy zebra to have something to read. She drew a bookshelf in another corner of the box. And then Lulu got one of her books and put that in the box. Lulu’s mommy told her that it was time for lunch, and Lulu went to the kitchen.
After finishing her lunch, Lulu went back to the box to continue making things for her toy zebra. But when Lulu looked inside the box, she saw a folded piece of paper. She unfolded the paper and saw a note written on it. The note said, “Thank you for the book, which I finished reading. May I please have another?” Lulu was very surprised. Where did this note come from, Lulu wondered.
Lulu went to her bookshelf and picked out another book and brought it over to the cardboard box, and put it inside. Then Lulu saw another piece of paper with a note on it, inside the box. The note said, “Thank you for the scrambled eggs. May I have something to drink please?”
Lulu laughed and was very surprised again. Where did this new note come from, Lulu wondered once more. She took out a piece of paper and drew a glass of water and put that in the box. Then Lulu’s mommy called her to the kitchen to help clean up. Lulu went and helped her mommy wash the dishes and put them away.
When Lulu came back to the box, she looked inside and saw a new note. This time the note said, “thank you for the water, can you put some windows by the blanket and pillow?” Lulu was very surprised again. She got some scissors and cut some small squares in the cardboard box, to become the shape of windows.
Then Lulu took a small piece of cloth, and taped that over the square holes she cut, to become the curtain for the window. Lulu put away the scissors and came back to the box and found one more note in it. This note said, “thank you for taking care of me, just as good as your mommy takes care of you.”
Then Lulu had an idea of who was writing the notes, and she went and hid under the bed to look and see what would happen. After a minute, Lulu saw her mommy go to the box and put a piece of paper in it. Lulu jumped out from under the bed and said, “surprise.”
Lulu’s mommy laughed because Lulu found out that it was mommy who was writing those notes and putting them in the box. The last note said that it was time for bed. Then Lulu went to the bathroom, and brushed her teeth. Finally she laid down in bed, closed her eyes, and went to sleep, slowly slowly slowly.
