Counting steps
One day Lulu was getting ready to go to the store with her mommy, and when they got outside the apartment, they noticed a sign on the elevator that said it was out of service, which meant that it was not working properly. So they decided to take the stairs.
Lulu’s mommy thought this was a good time to teach Lulu about counting. So Lulu’s mommy asked her to start counting the stairs as they went down to each floor level. Lulu started counting the steps; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight nine, ten.
Then they were at the middle level between the floors, so Lulu continued with the next steps to the lower floor; eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Now they were on the floor below them, but they still had a couple more floors to go down.
Lulu’s mommy asked her if she thought the next floor down would have as many stairs as the one above, and Lulu wasn’t sure, so she started counting again; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, then. Then again as before they were at the middle level between the floors.
Lulu continued with the next steps to the lower floor; eleven twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Now they were on the next floor below, which was two floors from where they started. Lulu counted again down to the next floor and it was another twenty steps.
Then lastly she counted one more time and they reached the ground floor and that was also twenty steps from the floor above. Then Lulu found out that there were twenty steps between each floor of her apartment building. When they got to the ground floor, they could see a repair woman fixing the elevator.
And Lulu told her that they took the stairs because the elevator was broken. Then the elevator repair woman said that it’s a good thing the stairs cannot break, otherwise they’d have to wait upstairs all day until the elevator was fixed. Lulu laughed and thought that was funny.
Lulu and her mommy went to the store, and when they came back, the elevator was fixed. Then Lulu wanted to see which was faster, the elevator or the stairs, so Lulu’s mommy took the elevator, and Lulu ran up the stairs very fast, and when Lulu got to the floor where she lived, her mommy was already there standing outside the elevator.
Lulu found out that the elevator was faster than the stairs this time. Next time she’ll try it going down, because taking the stairs down is faster than taking the stairs up. Then Lulu and her mommy got ready to make dinner.
After they ate dinner, Lulu read a little bit from a book. And she counted the pages she read, up to twenty. Then she got ready for bed and brushed her teeth. Finally, Lulu laid down, and went to sleep, slowly slowly slowly.
(my niece is learning to count to twenty)
